Competitive Cheerleading is a sport; although, many believe it isn’t. First introduced to the world in the late 1800’s, cheerleading started out as a sport for men to cheer on sports groups. Comp. Cheerleading is used as a pastime and a hobby for people all over the world. Competitive Cheerleaders can range from 2 to 24 years old. Although, cheerleading differs from many sports it is still very similar. Just like how you would compete on the field in football you compete on a mat in cheerleading. “...you're going out there and competing against other teams not just one team.” Erin Lenze, Coach of the Oil City Oilers Competitive Cheerleading Squad, announced on why comp. cheerleading is a sport. Competitive Cheerleading is strenuous and dangerous, not only for the body but the mind as well. Comp. Cheerleading is strenuous on the mind because in order to be a cheerleader you must be able to remember your routine and every individual step, including a tumbling and jump routine. Throughout the competition you must remember a three to four minute routine including a jump and tumbling routine; which, is strenuous on the mind. Also, you must be able to sharply hit each motion, then you must use your muscles to jump and tumble making it strenuous and dangerous on the body.
It takes plenty of skills and strength to be a cheerleader. Erin Lenze says that cheerleaders need to have,“skill, energy, commitment, enthusiasm, pep, dedication, determination, spirit, ability, stamina willingness to learn, willingness to cooperate, and willingness to promote and create school spirit.” In order to compete cheerleaders need upper body, core, upper, and lower leg muscles. Cheerleaders need to have upper body strength in their deltoids, pectoralis major and minor, and latissimus dorsi muscles. www.livestrong.com states that they use these muscles to, “ lift other cheerleaders above your head, tumble and even hit basic cheerleading arm motions.” The core muscles cheerleaders use are the rectus abdominus, obliques, and spinal erector muscles; which, are used for stunts and performing tumbling skills. For jumps, your core muscles help lift your legs up toward your body. You also need upper and lower leg muscles. Your upper leg muscles are the hamstrings, quadriceps, and glutes. The hamstrings are the back of the thigh; while, the quadriceps are the front. As stated on www.livestrong.com, “ these muscles are used extensively in stunting.” The lower leg muscles are the gastrocnemius, soleus, and the tibialis anterior.The lower leg muscles are extensively and especially helpful in jumping and tumbling, as they help get your body off the ground. The gastrocnemius is located on the back of the shin; as well as, the soleus. The tibialis is on the front of the shin. These muscles are mainly used for leg strength when performing jumps. Jumps such as: the pike, russian/toe touch, hurdler, and herkie. Over half of the muscles in your body are used to competitively cheer.
