Researchers have proven that if someone has a variant of a longevity gene, KLOTHO, they are more likely to have induced mental cognitive behavior. This behavior may include improved brain skills, thinking, learning and being able to grasp concepts quicker, and an increase in memory. Science has shown that the person’s age, gender, or risk for contracting Alzheimer’s disease is irrelevant in this study. Dena Dubal, M.D., Ph.D., who is an assistant professor of neurology at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) believes that this opens the door towards many research opportunities as well as allows doctors and scientists to aid the numerous people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease ...view middle of the document...

Blood tests also determined that people who only had one copy of KLOTHO had higher levels of klotho protein in their blood circulation. However, as age increased, these levels decreased. Some researchers blame this trend for lack of performance in the study. Suzana Petanceska, Ph.D., who is a program director in NIA’s Division of Neuroscience, stated that, “This study shows the importance of genes that regulate the multiple aging processes involved in the maintenance of cognitive function” (2014). She believes that being able to understand the causes and effects of the KLOTHO gene in various different organ systems can help treatments for dementia.
The fact that doctors are able to implement this newfound awareness is wonderful because it is extremely beneficial for not only our individual health, but for the greater good of the community as well. Cognition is the way in someone acts and understands the world. They are simple brain-based skills that we use in our everyday lives; we simply cannot live without them. They control how we perform numerous functions, from the simplest thing to the most complex, throughout our entire lives. Cognitive functions are more...
