1. Pedagogical approaches to children’s play and learning is when teachers/practitioners are focusing solely on the children and the best interests of the children in terms of their learning opportunities. By doing this also sticking to legislation and policies to ensure there is emphasis on the “importance of the child as an individual” and that early years workers are working to the best of their abilities to provide a fun, stimulating environment to extend children’s learning and these policies will also be working to "extend and support the working demands made on early years workers”. A time in which I put this in to practice within my placement was when I carried out one of my language experiences with the children. This experience was part of my graded unit focusing on numeracy development but for this experience I was incorporating language development. I took in to account the best interest of the children when planning this experience noticing that the majority of the children really enjoy to play in the role play area, so I involved the children in an experience within this area discussing and naming the different food items and seen if they could recognise some environmental print to enhance their language skills.
2. One theoretical approach to play is Lev Vygotsky’s theory and how he believes “imaginative play is a crucial component of a child’s normal development”. Vygotsky’s views are that when children are involved within imaginative play they are using their voices enhancing their language and vocabulary skills and “understanding of the external world” a child is always using inner-speech when involved within role play experiences, they are listening and mimicking the language of the adults around them and using this within their play and Vygotsky believes this is how children’s language skills are developed through play, by involving children in child-centred experiences. This links to active learning and emphasises how important Vygotsky believes it is for children to be involved in active learning in order to learn to the best of their abilities. Holistic development in a child age 3-6 years is also very important to take in to consideration, this involves “physical, intellectual and social and emotional well-being development”. A time in which I took one of these aspects in to consideration for my experience was when I carried out my detailed observation, involving the children in an experience making superhero masks whilst observing their fine motor skills. A second experience I have carried out focusing on the children’s language development is when I carried out a time-sample observation to observe if the children were using the book corner appropriately. The children weren’t therefore I involved the children within an experience discussing their favourite story and reading stories to the children enhancing their language skills.
