Should young children be pushed to compete at athletics?
Everyone has their own opinions about kids being pushed to play a sport. There are some people who believe it is good because of the obvious, sports will keep kids out of trouble and keep them healthy but sports will also be good for kids who love to play and run around a lot and it will help them learn how to work with others but there are others that believe that pushing your kid to do sports is bad because some kids are not naturally athletic or do not enjoy physical activities like others do. Also some parents would not want to force their kid to do something they may not like.
One reason for pushing your kid to play sports is a good thing is because when you have a kid who has nothing to do, he or she will most likely get into a lot of trouble because they are not occupied. “54 percent of American kids use an illegal drug before high school graduation.” (219) This is because most kids who are not in sports or simply in a “club” have nothing else to do. Some children follow in their parent’s footsteps. For example, if a kid is close to his or her dad and they see him drinking every night and they will become curious and want to know what that drink may taste like. So, one night they may sneak in the kitchen and taste that drink and may like it and that is how young children get addicted. Sometimes it could just be because they feel like they are not popular enough or that they may not fit in anywhere, so they may hang out with the wrong crowd that could be using or sailing drugs.
Another reason is their health. “According to the U.S. surgeon general, only about one-half of U.S. children get regular exercise, and one-fourth don't take part in physical activity at all. As a result, obesity among children has increased substantially since the 1960s.
