ChinaAs far back as anyone can remember values in a specific culture are of great importance to that culture because it is what people cherish the most. "Values are beliefs that the idealized ways of living and acting are the best ways for that society," (Gabriel 149). In this quote, Gabriel is evaluating the reasons for beliefs. According to him, we develop values because they give us limitations for living. Throughout this paper, you will observe the values in the American culture, as well as the traditional values in China.American ValuesOver the centuries, America has revolved around four specific values that over time has come to great importance to our society. According to the article by Zurcher and Meadow, the economy, family, politics and religion are the four major things that we value in our society.America values the economy for numerous reasons, but the main reason is because of the fact it holds our society together. "Economic well being of the individual person is valued not only has the cornerstone of a sound economy, but as the essential foundation for a full and rounded individual life," (Gabriel 196). According to Gabriel, he believes that the economy provides us with a way of life. The economy is what people strive on; it keeps our society alive by manufacturing goods and services for our survival as well as our pleasure.Another value is our families. If you take a deeper look at family, you will see that having a family is a way of life. In order for our species to keep surviving we are required to reproduce to keep the human race alive. Families are also important in our society because we need that special love that our families give us to go on with our daily lives.Politics, as everyone knows, plays a large part in our society. Politics is not only about our government, but it is also about our freedom of being a human being in our country. Politics give us the freedom of speech, press, religion and even the right to vote. "Freedom and responsibility of the individual adult citizen to have a voice in the government under which he lives, as exemplified in the right and responsibility to vote," (Gabriel 161). The author presents us with the fact that as Americans, we are entitled to have a voice in how our country is governed by voting. But in order to be able to help make these decisions in our government, we must gain the right to vote. Having the freedom to vote and the freedom of speech is a privileged that all Americans have earned. One of the last values that Americans treasure is religion. Everyone in America is entitled to practice any type of religion that they wish. Having this as a privilege has increased the value of religion dramatically. Religion is also a guide for how some cultures within our society live their lives. Some families even revolved their whole life around a certain religion. As you can see, our values are very important to American life. They are what give us life. Having values allow Americans to...
