According to the history books, China has been around 4,000 years, which would make them the oldest continuous civilization. They do have the oldest centralized date which history uncovered in 221 B.C. E. Countries have been trading with China for generations as they have created gun powder, printing paper, magnetic compass and of course bureaucracy (Clayre 8). Many of their records are transparent and unproven and archeologist to this day attempt to uncover the truth behind China whether it comes to their past dynasties and rulers.
China has over 1.3 billion people, which would make them the world’s most populous country, and it has been increasing for many years (CIA World Factbook). Having large families were normal in this country as the children are responsible to support the parents when they reached old age. Due to the high fertility rate China endures, the PRC implemented a program to attempt to control the issue. China’s goal is to decrease the population’s growth by 1.4 billion people by 2026 (Roberts). There are over 100 metropolitan areas with over 100 million people that the cities below will bestow upon you.
Beijing has been the capital since 1267 C.E. besides for five decades that ran between the fourteenth and fifteenth century as well as from the 1920’s to 1940’s. The term Beijing means “Northern Capital” and has a population of over 17 million people (The China Post). It has been a major tourism site due to its history that included the 2008 Olympic Games. Some of the major attractions it offers are the Forbidden Palace a.k.a. The Palace Museum and the Temple of Heaven.
The largest metropolis of China and one of the largest cities in the world is Shanghai where the Chinese Stock Exchange, Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai Pudong International Airport were constructed. With all the transitions this city has gone through, it became a treaty port during the first Opium War. It has an enormous amount of resources that have affected the population and the economy and that has varied from cheap labor supply and access to cotton. As a result, it has been handling 25% of China’s trade (About the Consulate.) The average age in Shanghai has rapidly raised over the last few years which has resulted in the city encouraging couples to having a second child but not providing any financial incentives to do so (Balfour).
Wuhan is the largest urban area in central China, which was the scene of major political uprisings that included the Battle of Red Cliffs and the Wuchang Uprising of 1911. Its resources coal and iron that helped it mature to one of the Communist China’s largest areas. The current population has an estimated population of 7.5 million people (The most populated cities in China).
