Every year millions of students are faced with a decision that will greatly affect their future, choosing the right college. In the fall of 2013, approximately 21.8 million students attended American colleges and universities (Fast Facts). Making sure you choose the right college is important because it will affect your future and it will determine what kind of education you will receive. When choosing the right college, a few things that need to be considered are the cost, the academics, and the campus (As You Research Colleges).

But even though the cost of college is a huge factor, it is not the only thing to consider.
In order to choose the right college, you need to also consider the academics. Ask yourself if the school offers majors or programs that you are interested in. If a student is undecided about their major then it is a good idea to choose an institution with a wide variety of majors and programs. This way, a student can take many different classes to help determine a career, pathway, or major they may be interested in. It will also give a student the opportunity to change their major if they so decide. On the other hand, if a student already knows what they want to major in, then they might want to choose a school that focuses primarily on that field. A school that focuses on a field offers related classes and programs to the students. This is helpful when a student knows what they want to major in and is ready to take classes that will help them be successful. Both parents and students are involved in picking colleges; however the campus size and campus life can really influence the student’s decision.
The campus life and campus size includes dorms, meal plans, clubs, sports, location, class size, the overall campus size, and much more. It is important to learn as much as you can about the colleges you want to attend. It is a good idea to go visit the campus and take a tour to actually see it for yourself (As You Research Colleges). On most campus tours, you are able to go into at least one of the dorms. It could be one of the bigger dorms or one of the smaller dorms. Ask about the other dorms available because you most likely won’t see all of them. As well as looking at the dorms, notice the size. The size of the campus does matter. It can sometimes determine the types of opportunities that are offered. Bigger schools often offer more extracurricular activities and sports, while smaller schools have smaller class sizes and a lower student-faculty ratio (What Makes a School). However college is not all about studying and working all the time....
