Bug out bags are always great to have around whether you're an avid lover of the outdoors or not. Emergencies can happen anywhere at any time and it's always better to be prepared with some emergencies supplies than to be left unprepared. There are many items that can be included in a bug out bag for various purposes, but one of the items that is necessary in every bug out bag is a good flashlight. It can be difficult to know which flashlight to buy for your bug out bag, but there are a few simple methods of figuring it out.

Battery powered items are essential in survival situations as batteries are commonly the only sources of power in an emergency. While batteries are useful, disposable batteries are more trouble than they're worth when it comes to survival items. Batteries lose power constantly, even when they're not being used. Even if you've never used the device before, the batteries could quickly become useless by just sitting around. In addition, leaving a battery in a device for extended periods of time can cause the batteries to become corroded and may even ruin the device.

Rechargeable batteries allow you to have the convenience of batteries without the hassle. Some rechargeable batteries do need power in order to fill their charges, but many flashlights have cranks that allow you to charge the battery without any external power source, and some flashlights can even charge through solar power.


When it comes to flashlights, you can't get much better than LED bulbs. They're brighter, clearer, last longer, more energy efficient and more durable than traditional light bulbs, which makes them a favorite for many uses including survival flashlights. LED bulbs are also a favorite for tactical flashlights as their intense brightness is good for blinding enemies.


When it comes to buying a flashlight for your bug out bag, brighter is almost always better. Visibility is vital when it comes to survival situations. 45 to 80 lumens is the preferred amount for many survival flashlights, but be warned that increased brightness means more strain on the batteries. A minimum of 80 lumens is needed for blinding enemies if you are looking for a tactical flashlight.
