In reading this chapter, one of the main ideas that touched my heart and mind was “The Kingdom Documents”. This gives good information on how Christians in Psychology can use the Word of God to show how God created everything and He alone has the authority over every aspect of our lives. The Christian can use the Word of God to teach about love, faith and God’s grace. “Christians primary intellectual task is to integrate their religious beliefs with disciplines that have already been developed” (Stevenson, 2007, p48).
This idea could be used in a counseling session. The Christian counselor could use the Word of God to teach and explain how God is in control of all things that are seen and unseen. The Christian counselor would prove through the Word of God that we do nothing on our own. “We believe our achievements have come unaided human effort” (Kraft, 1989, p30). Our human nature, the sin we are born into, makes us think that we do everything on our own without help from anyone or anything. By showing how faith and belief in God changes ones life, the Christian counselor could instruct and provide prayer and encouragement to their client.
We as Christians must set good examples for others to see in our own lives. By living and reading the Word of God, as we teach and advise, the person that we are trying to help will see how awesome God really is. “ The verbal revelation found in the Bible furnishes the inspired substance of a Christian world view as well as the king’s will for his subjects’ though, heart, and life” (Stevenson, 2007, p47). We should pray and encourage whomever we counsel that the Word of God is the best and foremost authority on anything in a person’s life. If we as Christian counselors teach the importance of the Word of God, we will get to see God work in our client’s life.
