Every year new medical reports are issued regarding the harmful effects of smoking cigarettes. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world die every year from diseases caused by smoking. Approximately one in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Half of these deaths will occur in middle age. The most common of the diseases caused by smoking is cancer, of course. In 1962 the Royal College of Physicians in London concluded, “Cigarette smoking is a cause of lung cancer and bronchitis, and probably contributes to the development of coronary heart disease.” The combination of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette takes oxygen away from the muscles, brain, and body. This increases your heart rate and blood pressure, straining the whole body and especially the heart and blood vessels causing heart attacks and stroke. Emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are two other diseases related to smoking. There are so many illnesses caused by smoking cigarettes but what if a person smokes for thirty-one years and does not develop any of the health issues mentioned.
