Now there is a clear diagnostic criterion for the condition of Alcohol dependence or alcoholism which is defined by the International Classification of Disease, ICD (World Health Organization, 1994) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, DSM (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). It is well recognized that this issue needed attention from three different point of views; prevention, treatment, and policy.

Even today there is no cultural value or religious acceptance for alcohol in Asia as there were no cultural roots or cultural meaning to it. Anyway after 12,000 years, variety of alcohol has been introduced among people and no more those needed reasons for drinking.
However, in Sri Lanka most of the population is aware that alcohol can harm a body if used in regular basis. But only few may have the knowledge on the chemical reaction that occurs within the body even in a case of consuming a sip. It is very common and has always been evident the behavioral change of people who use alcohol. Alcohol can directly effect to brain functions. So it is clear that alcohol is linked to physical issues as well as mental and emotional issues.
What is alcohol dependence; theories and symptoms?
We can define alcohol abuse as continuing unhealthy, unsafe drinking patterns, of consuming alcohol everyday or drinking excessively high. Also alcohol abuse creates negative consequences towards your life conduct. It can challenge your family relationships, social relationships , also it might cause to miss your job responsibilities and on the other hand alcohol abuse might make you dive into legal problems by driving while drunk. Even knowing these negative consequences if you continue to dink, we call it alcohol abuse.
If you continue to abuse alcohol, it can lead to alcohol dependence. Alcohol dependence is also called alcoholism. You are physically or mentally addicted to alcohol means you have a strong need, or craving, to drink.
There are few problems which have been globally recognized to check individuals who consume alcohol are alcohol dependants or not. Alcohol abusers who have at least three of following problems in a year are considered as alcohol dependence.
1. Difficult to give up drinking or limit how much you drink.
2. Wanting more drinks to get the same effect.
3. In case of quitting drinking, withdrawal symptoms occur. (heavy sweating, hand tremors, nausea and vomiting, hallucinations, agitation, anxiety, and seizures)
4. Spending a lot of time to drink and recover from drinking or giving up other important activities for drinking.
5. Not been able to quit drinking or to cut the drinking amount even if tried hard.
6. Continuation of drinking even knowing it seriously harms the body and the relationships
Most people probably do not know that problem drinking and addiction are not the same. People who abuse alcohol are not necessarily addicted. People who are addicted to alcohol do continue to drink even knowing the harmful effects of it. People who are addicted to alcohol can't control the amount they drink because they are physically and psychologically dependant on alcohol.
American author Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald’ famous quote on alcohol says “First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you”.
