Every year, 1 in 700 kids are born with cleft lip, cleft palate, or both. That means an average of six thousand plus babies are having to deal with a facial and oral deformation, that is both costly and is a long road to being accepted as normal. (RelayHealth) It is the fourth largest birth defect and you rarely hear about it. A surprising fact is the government spends an average of 66 Billion dollars every year on obesity prevention and obesity control, which could be dramatically decreased by better budgeting. ("Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery Cost") This is a disorder most people can have some control over and something scientists are trying to find a ; Cleft lip, the cause is still unknown. With this in mind, the government should not only reduce costs on certain things, but increase spending on finding a cure for cleft and other birth defects.

Orofacial clefts are usually isolated, meaning either cleft lip or cleft palate; However, if you have a cleft palate you usually are accompanied with a cleft lip. Usually the cleft palate is not by itself. (Johnston) Although the exact cause of orofacial clefts are unknown, it is believed that smoking and nutrition during pregnancy can possibly lead to a child with a cleft. (Edelson 32) Some doctors also classify as a multifactorial birth defect meaning it is caused by many things such as genes and other biological factors. It is not like down syndrome which is caused by an extra chromosome.
An important thing to remember with cleft is, nothing is mentally wrong with the person unless the child also has a mental defect along with the cleft. Cleft lip is also not necessarily a onetime surgery. I myself have cleft lip with cleft palate and I have had eight surgeries throughout my life. I'm seventeen years old and am planning on having at least two more surgeries just so I can feel and look better about my appearance.
