What type of architecture the new payroll application should use and why.
The new payroll system will utilize client/server based architecture with the use of thin clients running from a central terminal server located at the Data Center. The terminal server will communicate with the application server where the new payroll application will reside and the application server will communicate with the payroll database server.
The decision to use thin clients versus a traditional PC is based on cost, security and network traffic. What types of technology will be involved in the architecture and explain the purpose of each technology.
The network infrastructure will provide the groundwork for the data transmission. This includes how all the devices are connected and will communicate to each other. At each location there will be the thin client for the user to provide input; this data gets transmitted to the network switch which determines where the data is destined for. The switch then sends the data to the Customer Edge Router. The CER routes the data to the Provider Edge Router in the MPLS. The PER sees the data is meant for the Data Center and routes traffic to the Data Center CE Router. Once the Data Center Router sees the data is sends it to the switch, which then sends it to the servers. At the branch office locations all devices are connected via Layer 1 with Category 6 Gigabit Ethernet. The router will connect to the MPLS via Cat 6 to a fiber optic converter at the demarcation point. An MPLS Network is formed by connecting each location with a single link to a service provider MPLS network. An MPLS network stands for Multi-Protocol Label Switching and any packet coming to the Label edge routers (from individual locations – source, to the service provider MPLS network) are encapsulated with an MPLS label which is used to identify it and route it through the MPLS network. This label is discarded when the packet comes out of the MPLS network back to individual locations. (K, 2010) The Data Center will connect to the MPLS in same manor. The switch in the DC will connect to the router via Cat 6 Gigabit Ethernet. The servers will also connect to the switch with Cat 6 Gigabit Ethernet as well.
The user terminals will consist of thin clients, with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. This will allow the payroll staff to input and manipulate data in the payroll application. The thin clients will connect to a centralized terminal server that will provide a Windows desktop environment that launches the payroll application as well as other software applications needed by the payroll staff. The terminal servers will communicate with the application server that houses the new payroll application.
The application server will hold the core of the new payroll application and provide links to the terminal servers to run it remotely. The...
