Climbing The Psychosocial Ladder Essay

Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development relates to my life at some milestones but not all. Erikson has eight stages he feels everyone goes through in life during a certain age frame. Each stage is divided into age categories from birth through late adulthood. The eight stages are; trust vs mistrust, autonomy vs shame and doubt, initiative vs guilt, industry vs inferiority, identity vs identity confusion, intimacy vs isolation, generativity vs stagnation, and ego integrity vs despair. The first six stages seem to mostly fit to the development of who I am today.

The third stage of the theory is initiative vs guilt. This stage is between the ages of three to six years old. During this stage children start to learn to face challenges and accomplish different tasks. These tasks can range from starting to learn how to kick a soccer ball into a goal, hitting a baseball or softball off of a tee, to tying a shoelace for the first time. These new experiences may be difficult at first but with encouragement and support eventually the child will accomplish the goal. My parents enrolled me in swimming classes when I was three years old. Initiative was a huge part in my development, I started by getting into the cold water with the strange lady, then from there I learned to go underwater, how to blow bubbles into the water, how to turn my head side to side to breathe, and before I knew it I was floating in the water and paddling around without holding on to the pool wall. By encouraging me to keep going and by seeing that I could get better and better my parents instilled a huge driving force to take on challenges head on.
Industry vs inferiority is the fourth developmental stage. This stages typically occurs from six years old to about twelve. By six most children are starting school for the first time. During this stage adolescents learn important skills that will follow them for the rest of their lives like reading and writing. Being encouraged by family, friends, and teachers kids either begin to feel competent or inferior. During adolescence I had a lot of encouragement. I was always quick to learn and things came very easily to me. My mom had her own daycare and stayed home so she could be a part of my growth and development. She would challenge me and give me activities to do that were above my age range. This action made me feel like I could conquer anything! I felt like I was smart, I felt competent.
