This paper is intended for the purpose of providing the CIO with the information needed to make a decision whether or not to implement cloud services into our network infrastructure. Information is provided on the types of cloud services available, the vulnerabilities, strengths and weaknesses, email and storage providers, and the recommendation of the research team.
The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) initiated an electronic communication project which led to one of the most advanced computer infrastructures of its time. The goal was to provide extremely quick and efficient methods of communication for military command. To bring the most talented minds together on the subject, DARPA opened up research and development to various universities within the United States in order to realize DARPA's infrastructure and full potential. Once universities had realized the technological impact that DARPA could have, they formed a communications network between educational institutes which progressively opened up for use to the general public. DARPA is responsible for creating what is commonly referred to as the Internet and is the platform that drives the cloud computing engine today.
Due to the rise in popularity of virtualization technology and faster transmission speeds with higher bandwidth, cloud computing has advanced to the forefront of today's cutting edge technology. Organizations are continuing to look for ways to provide efficient and reliable storage availability for organizational assets and agility to change requirements quickly in alignment with national and global business strategies. According to Gartner, “cloud computing revenue for cloud services will approach 152.1 billion in 2014”. The expected exponential growth regarding Cloud computing's low cost and capability to provide seemingly limitless storage capacity is certainly taking Cloud services to a new level and gaining a foothold within the arena of digital storage. Organizations are seeing significant benefits in cloud services that provide efficient storage management productive storage capacity and lucrative returns on investment due to Cloud's low cost and lack of required investment on architecture and internal support services. The low cost and high return coupled with efficient and seemingly limitless storage capability provides significant increase in potential economic growth making implementation a lucrative venture. The various advantages for utilizing cloud technology and its infusion of a cloud centralized infrastructure can be deployed in various configurations to meet most business needs.
