1.0 Introduction1.1 LocationThe South East Queensland (SEQ) region is located in the far south-eastern corner of the Australian state of Queensland. (Refer to Figure1) The co-ordinates for SEQ are 27.0000˚S, 152.0000˚E. The region covers 22,520km2 which spans 240km north to Noosa (Sunshine Coast) and south to the New South Wales (NSW) border (past the Gold Coast) and 140km west to Toowoomba (lockyer Valley). SEQ has a total population of 3.05 million people and is the location for Queensland's capital city, Brisbane. The field trip focused on the Surat Basin and Darling Downs region (Refer to Figure 2) within SEQ. The Darling Downs is an extensive farming area with highly fertile soils on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range, at just over 100km west of Brisbane and bordering NSW. The region covers 77,389km2 of southern Queensland and includes many towns such as Toowoomba, Dably, Warrick and Miles. The Darling Downs also covers a geological basin called the Surat Basin which is a part of a much larger Australian basin called The Great Artesian Basin (Refer to Figure 3). The Surat Basin cover an area of 270,000km2 which covers a vast extent of northern NSW and southern Queensland. The Surat Basin is comprised of many geological layers of siltstone, mudstone and sandstone which are relatively impermeable and are called aquatards. Layers on top are made of permeable material including sandstones, which are called aquifers. (For a drilling sample , See Appendix 1) Theses sediments obtain their maximum thickness at 2500m in Queensland. Felton is a valuable farming district in the inner Darling Downs around 30km from Toowoomba. Felton is a broad open valley on the western side of the Great Dividing Range, (See Appendix 3) the Hodgson creek runs through the centre as a valuable water source. (McCreath, 1 May 2014) The region has a climate with two distinct summer and winter seasons....

Natural Resources:Nonrenewable or Renewable Essay

811 words - 4 pages over past years, resulting in hazardous consequences. The first category, nonrenewable sources, includes fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas. Nearly all countries use them to provide energy, and the most abundant of these is coal. The problem with coal of sources, besides the fact that it comes in limited quantities, lies in the excavation. Coal extraction typically occurs through strip mining when the coal seams are close to the earth's

Natural Gas is a Viable Alternative Energy Source for Electricity Production

2921 words - 12 pages alternative energy is the ideal source of electricity, but many argue about the available technology and efficiency of these sources. Many believe extracting unconventional natural gas sources would greatly benefit the United States in terms of limiting foreign oil dependency and providing a clean energy source, while others argue that cleaner coal technology is needed. The United States’ total natural gas production comes from four sources: gas

the importance of coal

1454 words - 6 pages the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing in order to support the mine. These pillars can later be recovered, mining the coal while the workers are retreating. Finally, the roof falls and the mine can be abandoned. On the other hand, Longwall mining requires more careful and precise planning. First, there needs to be insurance that favorable geology exists throughout the area, before the work begins. Then the wall of coal is built, which

1679 words - 7 pages seen in the figure below. As seen in the figure below CSG would equate for almost 50% of the sources of salt inputs from the aquifers to surface water (5). The concern with the salt levels in the Murray Darling is being monitored closely as it is a highly agriculture area and high salinity levels in soils can affect the quality of crops(6). Reports have also shown concern with the vast amount of chemicals that are used in producing coal seam gas

Anthropogenic Sources of Atmospheric Methane

1002 words - 4 pages , compressor station operations, gas processing facilities, gas-operated control devices, maintenance, and unintentional yet unavoidable leaks result in the primary methane emissions from the natural gas system. Natural gas is often found in conjunction with the exploration of oil. Methane is also released during the production, refinement, transportation, and storage of crude oil. Coal Mining Coal mining accounts for about 12% of U.S

The Composition, Benefits, And History Of Coal

3195 words - 13 pages goes through all the layers of coal just underneath the surface exposed coal seam (Thomas, 1992). This is done only when it is hard to mine the coal because there are too many kinds of coal in the seam and they want only one kind of coal. Another type of sampling is called channel sampling and this is used for mostly coal veins. How they do this is very interesting because they actually make a channel cut across the vein in order to obtain the
