From a pharmacy experiment to a global enterprise, Coca-Cola has made the necessary acquisitions and organizational changes to meet both customer and employee demands. The organization has been able to increase its breadth by motivating the employees to meet the challenges with rewards, benefits, and recognition. Though Coca-Cola is globally known for its beverages, its organizational culture of developing its human assets has allowed the company to expand its products and geographical reach, bringing those beverages into the homes across the world.Company BackgroundIn 1886 John Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist made a caramel-colored liquid and mixed it with carbonated water. He took the sample to Jacobs' Pharmacy to have it sampled. Customers liked it so they sold it for five cents a glass. The beverage was named Coca-Cola by Frank Robinson, John Pemberton's bookkeeper. In the first year, nine glasses of Coca-Cola were sold. John Pemberton died in 1888 not knowing the success of the drink he had created. In a three year time frame Asa Griggs Candler secured the rights for about $2,300. He was the first president who brought the real vision to the Coca-Cola business and the brand. "Coca-Cola was introduced in 1886, patented in 1887, registered as a trademark in 1893 and by 1895 it was being sold in every state and territory in the United States" (Coca-Cola Company, 2009, ¶1). Coca-Cola has grown so big now that millions of people drink coca-cola products every day. For any occasion some kind of Coca-Cola product is always available to drink. As this company has grown, the number of consumers buying Coca-Cola beverages continues to grow and they carry it on from generation to generation.Coca-Cola offers a variety of beverages. They have a portfolio of more than 3,000 beverages including a number of waters, flavored and unflavored, diet beverages, energy drinks and sports drinks aimed at supporting consumers' active and healthy lifestyles. "Coke is it -- it being the world's #1 soft-drink company. The Coca-Cola Company owns four of the top five soft-drink brands (Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Fanta, and Sprite)" (Coca-Cola Company, 2009, ¶1).
