Back in the day of King Arthur, Knights fought for their kings. A Knight was a special soldier who worked directly for the king. They were the best of the best. Though these knights were fierce on the battlefield, they were expected to be the gentlest of gentlemen when they were not lobbing the heads off of the shoulders of opposing knights. There was a strict code of conduct which these men were obligated to follow. It was a code designed to prevent the knights from committing the horrible crimes that many other soldiers unfortunately so often committed. It was brought into existence to make sure that the men who were sworn to protect the royalty would stay descent and honorable men. This code of chivalry was composed of three main ideas of how an honorable man should conduct himself. Knights were obligated by the code to be courageous, honorable, and polite to women.
First of all, knights were supposed to show courage in times of trouble. This was meant to ensure that the king and queen would be always safe. If the king or queen was in trouble, knights were obligated to protect them with their lives. If a knight effectively protected those to which he was bound, he would be greatly rewarded for doing so. On the other hand, if a knight chickened out and left a king or queen unprotected, he could be severely punished. This rule changed the mindset of the knights. They learned to be courageous, and the courage turned to instinct.
To continue, knights were to be honorable men. The biggest part of a knight’s honor was his honesty toward his rulers. A knight was obligated to tell the truth at all times. This meant that if a knight took this rule seriously, he would most likely take others just as seriously.
