Collaborative learning is gaining popularity with changes occurring in the educational field as More and more teachers use collaborative learning when they think of innovative strategies. The purpose of this study being to examine to what extent collaborative learning can be effective in developing critical understanding of literary texts. A wide range of collaborative strategies have been devised and implemented so as to achieve this aim. This chapter elaborates the methodology that has been adopted to help students develop critical understanding and also focuses on the data collection tools and details on the strategies that were adopted.
WHY AN INTERVENTIONIST CASE STUDY?
A case study is an analytical study of an issue providing detailed analysis of a complex situation and trying to solve the existing problem. Robert K. Yin defines the case study research method as an empirical inquiry investigating contemporary phenomenon in depth and within its real-life context, especially when the boundaries between phenomenon and context are not clearly apparent and in which multiple sources of evidence are used (Yin, 1984, p. 23). Gerring (2004) stated that a case study:
“is best defined as an intensive study of a single unit with an aim to generalize across a larger set of units”
Hence, this approach allows the researcher to conduct an in depth study of a particular situation with aim of being able to define, explain and understand the case. Furthermore, it also works towards finding solutions to the underlying problems that are discussed and researched upon in the case study.
Robert Stake (1998) pointed out that the central idea of a case study is not the methods of investigation but what counts is the object of the study that should be the central focus:
“As a form of research, case study is defined by interest in individual cases, not by the methods of inquiry used”.
In the same line, this dissertation studies the case instead of focusing on the methods used to remedy the case. Moreover, I believe that a case study will assist to understand the case of my school from various angles I shall study through the use of varying methodologies adopted.
This research will also be an interventionist Case Study whereby my role as a teacher will not only be to observe and report findings but I will also intervene and try to find the solution to the problem existing at my school. Therefore, I will equally be an active participant and a facilitator to my students whose critical understanding I intend to enhance through the use of collaborative learning in my English Literature class. The interventionist case study paradigm has been chosen since I want to explore the problems and hindrances students of my school encounter regarding their critical understanding of English Literature. This research will also give me the opportunity to reflect on my own approach to the subject as an educator and it will also provide me an insight into the strategies I...
