America, the land of the free, has been eye-candy for hundreds of years for people all around the world who seek for opportunity for a better life. Some people will do whatever it takes to attempt living the “American dream”, even to the point of obtaining it illegally. According to CNN, in 2012 there were an estimated 11.7 million undocumented workers in the U.S. Because of the drastic increase in illegal immigration, Reform of immigration laws has brought on a very polarized controversy with some wanting amnesty for immigrants, while others seek for strict enforcement of legal measures and deportation of illegal aliens. Many people have taken stands and have spoke up on the matter. ...view middle of the document...
President Obama has been working diligently to provide amnesty for all illegal immigrants in the United States. This concept was turned down by the American people while President George W. Bush was in office, so now Obama is taking to new tactics to achieve his goal by cogently distracting the people with “unemployment, crashing real estate values, banking scandals, health care reform, foreign policy crises, and countless other issues, [so that] they would not notice just what was actually taking place” (FAIR). So far the Obama Administration has been able to render many immigration laws meaningless without “protest from Congress.”
Not only does America not enforce penalties, but they tend to reward illegal immigrants for accessing the country. America provides for the needs of illegal aliens and helps them to establish a new living on our soil with all of the “goodies waitin’:
“Like health care, welfare, free education,
Help with your voter registration
And drivers license and credit cards
And license plates for your old car.” (lines 19-23)
There’s also“public housing and cable tv, and food stamps and government cheese” (lines 40-41) given to help the illegals. Though several of the items Stevens lists fall under the category of being hyperboles, some of the “goodies” are actually provided for illegal immigrants. According to B. Lindsay Lowell, the Director of Policy Studies at the Institute for the Study of International Migration, taxpayers pay “as high as $2.2 billion” for treatment for these uninsured aliens. In fact, “dozens of hospitals in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, have been forced to close or face bankruptcy because of federally-mandated programs requiring free emergency room services to illegal aliens” (CAIRCO). Many illegal immigrants will come to America and have children to secure citizenship for them under the 14th Amendment. Once the child has citizenship, the parents can file for welfare under the child’s name, which many illegal immigrants take advantage of, costing taxpayers millions and billions (Fox News). Healthcare and welfare are just a few of the many handouts given to illegal immigrants when they come to America.
Taxpayers and hardworking citizens are affected by the results of illegal immigration. Stevens begins his song with this opening line: “This is the IIAP, Illegal Immigration Assistance Program. A taxpayer funded division of Oaknut.” This spurious statement is more than just a mockery, but actually holds quite a bit of truth in it. U.S. taxpayers spend “about $113 billion a year at the federal, state, and local level” to cover the cost of illegal immigrants. That’s an average of $1,117 in wages “per native-headed household.”. If Congress allows amnesty of these immigrants, not only would the fiscal burden grow, but illegals would become “eligible for numerous social assistance programs available for low-income populations” (FAIR). Because of the lack...
