Living in a world where segregation is common amongst our fellow peers and hostility fills our society like a common flu; it's no wonder suicide is labeled the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. Suicide is a rising epidemic in today's society that affects all of our lives in one way or another. However, this still remains a silent issue. Multiple factors are included in these cases, which if properly addressed, could avert further crisis. Suicide claims 30,000 lives every year, one every 18 minutes. With numbers like this, I think it's time to put halt to this heinous participation.The Oxford English Dictionary defines Suicide as an act of taking one's own life; one who dies by his own hands, self-murder.1 Durkheim defines suicide as follows: "…the term suicide is applied to all cases of death resulting directly or indirectly from a positive or negative act of the victim himself, which he knows will produce this result."2 There are four common groups that suicide is factored into: Egoistic suicide, Altruistic suicide, Anomic suicide and Fatalistic suicide. Egoistic suicide is caused by one's social involvements, or lack of. When one's social groups are weak, he tends to depend on himself only; a suicide produced from excessive individualism. Altruistic suicide involves overwhelming goals and beliefs. This is common in highly populated areas where one's outlooks are not viewed as highly to others. Anomic suicide pertains to a major alter in one's financial equilibrium. Examples would be filing for bankruptcy or winning the lotto. Fatalistic suicide is due to the overregulation in society.
