Common Core: Killing Creativity Essay

I have a strong interest in education; in fact, I am currently in college going after my degree in liberal studies, in hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher in the near future. This year I signed up to volunteer as room mom in my daughters second grade class in order to get more of a hands on experience and really figure out if this is the career I see myself wanting and having. Something that I didn’t realize until becoming more hands on in a classroom setting are the effects of the “Common Core Curriculum” having on children. What exactly will the world look like by then and how exactly do we educate children so they are prepared for it? Education is meant to take us into a future that we cannot even grasp. Moreover, the pace of technology in this information age moves so fast that we are educating children today for the jobs that do not yet exist (Nichols, p.27). Creativity is the process of having original ideas that hold value that need to be explored in a classroom setting and should be considered just as important in education as literacy, but yet the common core curriculum doesn’t consider it essential to learn.
Another issue with the adopted common core is the excessive assessment points and benchmark tests that are tracked and reported, which result in more data than the teachers know what to do with and less time for higher quality instruction. More often, teachers are now finding themselves teaching only for the test, while placing too much emphasis on testing strategies and covering material that is only expected to be on the tests. Most teachers do not want to spend extra time on testing at the expense of teaching and learning, but teachers are now facing termination because of poor student grades due to the common core curriculum tests. Students taking these tests are confronted with harder questions, demands of more complex answers than normal as well as not having enough time to provide full answers. Rebecca Stietz, also a parent, also addressed her concerns with the common core in an article I read in the Huffington Post to give a better idea of what these tests entail.
“So here’s one essay prompt:
You have learned about electricity by reading two articles, “Energy Story” and “Conducting Solutions,” and viewing a video clip titled “Hands-On Science with Squishy Circuits.” In an essay, compare the purpose of the three sources. Then analyze how each source uses explanations, demonstrations, or descriptions of experiments to help accomplish its purpose.
