Communication and Marriage Communication plays an immense role in effective relationships. Communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior. The short stories "This Blessed House" and "A Temporary Matter" by Jhumpa Lahiri both focus on the kind of communication you need in an effective relationship. This essay will discuss the different types of communication between the couples in the two stories and if the problems with communication behavior are similar to one another. "A Temporary Matter" focuses on a type of communication that is not very often seen in modern days. The communication between the couple, Shoba and Shukumar went from speaking to one another every time the saw each other, to barely speaking at all. In the beginning of the story Shoba and Shukumar, receive a notice stating, "For five days their electricity would be cut off for one hour, beginning at eight P.M." (1) The story then continues and looks about a year back, to the events that happen prior to the couple receiving the electricity notice. The story includes a flashback and paints a picture of a happy couple that is expecting a birth of a child. When, Shoba goes in to give birth to her baby three weeks early, she ends up losing her baby. It was a stillbirth. "The baby was born dead." (3) At the end of the story, the reader learns that while Shoba is recovering in the hospital, Shukumar unknowingly comes to the hospital and finds out the sex of the stillborn child. After the loss of their baby, the communication between Shoba and her husband Shukumar changes: "He and Shoba had become experts at avoiding each other in their three-bedroom house, spending as much time on separate floors as possible. He thought of how he no longer looked forward to weekends, when she sat for hours on the sofa with her colored pencils and her files, so that he feared that putting on a record in his own house might be rude. He thought of how long it had been since she looked into his eyes and smiled, or whispered his name on those rare occasions they still reached for each other's bodies before sleeping." (4-5) After analyzing and comprehending this quote, the reader may perhaps now understand how the communication methods have changed between Shoba and Shukumar. The writer also mentions in the story that, intimacy between Shoba and Shukumar is missing and even the friendship. Once they receive the electricity notice, Shoba comes up with a game; where the two of them have to "say something to each other in the dark that they never told before" (13). The game is the key to talk to each other since; they practically do not talk to one another at all. In addition, they tell each other something that they do not know about, but some things are more important than others are. During the game, they keep on remembering about their memories from the past, like the time they were dating. In fact, on the...
