Communication And Technology In Our Everyday Lives

992 words - 4 pages

The world we live in today is driven by technology. From the moment we wake up to the time we go to bed, we rely on technology. It has evolved from a bystander role, to being an integral part of our lives. One way technology has changed our lives is through communication. (Lawlor) Instead of face to face connections and how things were since the beginning of human existence, everything has shifted towards online interactions and web based communication. During the past 3 decades, the methods in which people connected were restricted to face to face interactions, letters, telephones; more personal ways of communication. It doesn’t come as a surprise that as new technologies arise; new ways to connect also arise. The most popular advancement that has arisen is the internet and web based technology. Through the advent of this new age technology we have also lost a part of who we were and how we used to interact. Technology has been a blessing in the way that it has allowed us to communicate with anyone, anywhere, and any given time. It has brought people from all different races, cultures, and creeds together.
In several ways new technology has given us the ability to reinforce our relationships by allowing us to keep with old friends, co-workers, family, and colleagues. What would happen to us if we weren’t able to see what old friends from high school are doing through Facebook? Technology has even helped students from all over to continue their education on their own time at their own pace.
If we try to imagine going to restaurant, or even going out with friends what we would do without having our phones by our side. Whenever people go out, they use their phone as a kind of security blanket. They’ll use it for when the conversation gets dull or boring. Many people would rather be on their phones than talk or socialize with others. People are so caught up in the notion that they are going to miss something; a snapchat, an important message, a Facebook notification. In a way we are like slaves to our technology.
Before examining the consequence of technology on face-to-face communication, it is vital to recognize the fast development of numerous technologies and how they are used throughout the US. During the past 20 years, usage of...
