Community Living Ontario is an organization that speaks on behalf of the intellectually disabled. They have established one hundred and seventeen local Community Living associations across Ontario and have over twelve thousand members across the province. Community Living encourages people to accept and include the intellectually disabled within the community. This essay will discuss how Community Living Ontario promotes individuals to be Christ-like by asking people to accept others without prejudices, to stand up for what they believe is right and to show Christ-like love and respect.
Community Living aims for the intellectually disabled to be assimilated into the community. This requires everybody to accept the disabled as valid members of the community. This also calls people to be less judgmental and more welcoming to those different from themselves. Moreover, it asks people to embrace those that society normally shuns.
Through accepting the intellectually disabled, we are following the beatitude, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” This beatitude calls people to stand up for what is right and to avoid turning the cheek to wrong doing. Community Living challenges individuals to stand up against prejudice towards the intellectually disabled. Discriminating against others because of their intellectual or physical abilities is wrong. By accepting those who are usually rejected, we are following the guideline that Jesus gave us to help us live a better and happier life.
