COMMUNITY RELATION S / COMMUNITY POLICING Years ago patrolmen walked the beat and usually it was the same officers walking the same beat night after night, day after day. The officers got to know the people and the people got to know the officers, therefore they built a good rapport between them.Citizens were not afraid to walk up to an officer and report a suspicious matter because that officer was well known and respected. As police stopped walking the beat and started using patrol cars that personal touch with the citizens became less and less. Today some departments are getting back to community policing by putting officers back on the beat and by having officers on bike patrols.Community relations establishes rapport with certain segments of the community. Each Officer should take part in community relations with the public to try to better respond to citizens questions, and concerns. Although there are public relation units that deal with the media, each officer on the street needs to make community relations a part of their daily work to improve relations between police and citizens. The Community Relations Unit does such things as the Dare program, speaking to students at Schools , tours of police station, ride along Patrols, Web pages, and Crime Prevention programs.Community Policing is keeping close to the community and using community relations as a tool for this purpose. In order to Reduce chronic crime conditions rather than focusing on making arrests, and emphasizing crime prevention rather then only addressing crimes that have occurred.
