Community Service Essay

1353 words - 6 pages

Community service is an invaluable experience that everybody should have. Through community service you can help yourself by helping others. You learn your strengths and weaknesses, on top of everything you learn about others and the world. Through my sixty hours of service with Colleges Against Cancer, I have learned a lot.
Community service with CAC was extremely beneficial. I feel as though it helped me understand the struggles of other individuals better and comprehend how even a little bit of help can make a huge difference. Not only would I like to work with Relay for Life in the future, but I would most definitely be willing to volunteer for events similar like the suicide prevention walks that are now on the rise. Events such as these are really important and need all the support they can get.
Relay for Life events take a massive amount of organization and team work. In the past I had plenty of experience with working on a team. This previous experience was vital to helping me make our Relay for Life events a success. The Relay for Life committees for both my years volunteering were wonderful and worked well together. Their tireless efforts and ability to work together were contagious and made all the volunteers better. Organization was essential too. Relay for Life events are huge, take a lot of time to plan, and require everything to be organized. If it were for the organizational skills of those involved, Relay would have been unsuccessful. I see myself as a fairly organized individual, which only helped me when it came to volunteering with Relay. While a lot of my volunteer work was easy enough, having more experience with Relay for Life events before starting my service would have been beneficial. Picking up on how Relay works was not that hard but prior knowledge would have given me a greater appreciation for all the work that goes into the events.
I am currently a Psychology major. My service with CAC and Relay for Life only confirmed that, that is what I want to do with my life. I entered Psychology with a desire to help others in one context or another. Relay for Life is all about helping those with cancer. As previously stated, cancer has a drastic effect on all those involved. Quite often people need help coping with and understanding what they are going through. These individuals quite frequently seek counseling of some sort. This is where the psychology aspect comes in. You listen to all these stories about how strong individuals with cancer are, how strong their families are, and how sometimes they just need a little extra help. Hearing all this only reaffirmed the fact that when I am done here at Elmira, I want to go into the world and be that extra help those individuals need. It is important to have an open set of ears to hear all your concerns and fears, especially when faced with a disease that all too often means not having a future. If I had any doubts about my major choice before, my experience with CAC has removed them all.
Volunteer experience quite frequently teaches us about ourselves and others around us. I learned a lot about myself. I learned that even when I feel like I can’t make a difference at all because I am only one person that I can and do make a difference. All it takes is one tiny act or...
