The Indian black berry (Syzygium cumini Skeels), is an important minor fruit of commercial value, belonging to the family Myrtaceae [1]. It is a large, evergreen, deciduous tree, which widely grown throughout the tropical and subtropical countries of the world due to its wider adaptability and nutraceutical properties [2]. Jamun could be a vital source food and income as it possesses diverse health benefits that may be attributed due to presence of the various pharmacologically active phytochemicals like flavonoids, terpenes, and anthocyanins [3, 4]. S. cumini fruits have great nutraceutical and medicinal properties, most importantly seeds used as a remedy for diabetes mellitus and as rich source of natural antioxidants [5 - 7]. Jamun has various other pharmacological activities like hypoglycaemic, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antihelmintic, antibacterial, astringent, gastro-protective, antigenotoxic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties proven on animal models [8 - 14]. Every part of the tree as ripe fruits are used for health drinks, making preserves, squashes, jellies and wine . The bark is acrid, digestive and astringent and useful for strengthen the teeth and gums, treating sore throat, dysentery and ulcers [15]. The leaves are using as ethanomedicine for the ailment of diabetes, gastronomical and control blood pressure [16]. Jamun is highly nutritive as it also contains important carbohydrates, free amino acids, minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorous, iron, zinc and water soluble vitamins like ascorbic acid, thiamine and niacin [17, 18].
Considering the commercial and medicinal importance of this unexploited crop there is a great need for crop improvement and to develop varieties suitable for cultivation.
