Comparing And Contrasting Subunits Of Memory Storage

791 words - 4 pages

The study of memory has two primary parts: the systems problem of memory and the molecular problem of memory. Along with these two parts, there are two subunits into which memory falls. Implicit memory is the motor and perceptual aspect of our memory while explicit memory is the recall of facts and events. In this lecture, the systems used for memory storage in these two subunits are explained and contrasted.
Implicit memory storage differs from explicit memory storage in the way that it occurs in reflex pathways and the cerebellum of organism rather than in a hippocampus and temporal lobe. It also is based on an unconscious recall versus a conscious recall process. Both implicit and ...view middle of the document...

This was one of the concepts that had been touched in our AP bio course. Cyclic AMP concentrations varied on that of cyclin concentrations during phosphorylation of different proteins and protein synthesis. In short term memory, this relationship exists as well.
Also, long-term memory requires protein synthesis and inhibitors can actually cause a process much like that of gene regulation. If you apply an inhibitor protein to the organism’s ganglia, long-term memory is blocked and short-term memory occurs to an extent. This is because cyclic AMP is inhibited and not able to bind to other proteins to carry out the rest of the processes.
In explicit memory, spatial learning is studied to show how memory recall occurs in the hippocampus in synaptic pathways. In an experiment, mice were forced to recall the location of certain hideaway. After numerous trials with the location in the same area, the mice were able to directly migrate to their destination. When looking at the synaptic pathways within the hippocampus, it was found that increased training resulted in a more long-term potential of the mice recalling their location. On a molecular level, this occurs when camkinase LLA puts in more ampareceptors into the cell so that proteins can bind and send signals to recall information. When inhibitors are put into the cell to...
