Comparing And Contrasting The Outsiders Essay

802 words - 4 pages

The surface of an avocado, like the Greasers in S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, appears dark, thick- skinned, and tough. However, once you peel the outside of the avocado, deep inside you will find a golden heart just as you will in a young male character named Ponyboy in Hinton’s book and in the movie based on her book. Ponyboy gives the impression that he is a tough hoodlum. However, when you peel away the stereotypes others use to label his group of friends, you will find that he is a gold-hearted person. Although the movie and the book, both entitled The Outsiders, contain several similarities, they have many differences as well.
To begin with, when comparing the book and the movie, you will find they both tell the story of fourteen-year-old Ponyboy Curtis who is the youngest brother in the Curtis family. He earns good grades, loves sunsets, and grows up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a small house where everybody is welcome. He also struggles with right and
wrong in a society in which he believes he is an outsider. Furthermore, Ponyboy and his two brothers Darry, who is 20, and Sodapop, who is 16, have recently lost their parents in an automobile accident. Pony and Soda are allowed to stay under Darry's guardianship as long as they behave themselves. Also, all three brothers are Greasers, a class term that refers to the young men on the poor side of town. In both the movie and the book, the Greasers' rivals are the Socs, who are the rich kids from across the tracks. Although considered bitter rivals, when spending time with Cherry, a Soc, Ponyboy finds that the Greasers and the Socs aren’t so different. After all, they both see the same sunset just from different sides. Later on at the park in both the book and the movie, Pony and Johnny are outnumbered by drunk Socs, who grab Ponyboy, shove him face first into the fountain, and hold his head under the water. Realizing that Ponyboy is drowning, Johnny panics, pulls his switchblade, and kills a Soc named Bob. When contrasting the book and the movie, you will find that in the book Pony has to go to court since he present when Johnny killed Bob, but in the movie there is not a court scene. Also, in the movie...
