The world is growing increasingly competitive, with newer technologies making the earth seem to shrink in size. Now this isn't literally of course but figuratively. Information can be shared faster, and at a fraction of the cost that it used to. Therefore this newer technology has flattened out the world, Thomas L. Friedman stated that “ Every young American today would be wise to think of himself or herself as competing against every young Chinese, Indian, and Brazilian.”. Globalization makes it easier for people to connect and share their ideas. It also makes it easier for people to travel to work and connect with their co workers who may be hundred of miles away. To make sure one cannot be off shored one must know which category to chose when choosing a career. On the other hand offshoring may not be in the manufacturing business but maybe in the software development. Many companies are looking into India for software developers. This is an occupation that can be off-shored. Since the developers only have write code they can write it then email it to their supervisor who can be miles away. This means that people with a higher education can get the job even if they live halfway across the world.
The level of education one needs to thrive, have a good career, and retire comfortably is increasing. In order to gain an advantage over ones competitors one must follow Tom Peters advice from his article Business. In this article he gives six survival skills to make it in the workforce. First is “Mastery”, one cannot simply perform the task they have to be better than everyone else they are competing with. From Malcolm Gladwell's Book Outliers, he researched how it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master something. Employers are looking for the masters in the subject they are hiring. “Who Do You Know”, to get into a fortune 500 company one must have a way in or at least be able to get their foot in the door with someone to vouch for them. One cannot simply walk in and expect to be hired anymore. Recommendations and lengthy applications are now in place to see who is the best of the best. “Entrepreneurial Instinct” One must have strong leadership skills and be able to think of new ideas.
