"One way to forget about pain is to do something you will be in, completely. So, computer games." This is a quotation said by Danylo Ishutin or better known as “Dendi”. In the late 20th century, our view of using the computer and the internet is slowly changing. As time pass by more and more are being obsessed with the computer. Computer addiction is the excessive use of computers to the extent that it interferes with daily life. Excessive use may explain problems in social interaction, mood, personality, work ethic, relationships, thought processes, or sleep deprivation (Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia). There are different types of computer addiction and one of those types is being addicted to computer games. If a person spends most of the time playing computer games, then that person is a computer addict.
In the world of gamers there are three types of gamers. The first are Pro-gamers, they are competitive and more skilled players and they play in tournaments and earning money with it. Second are social players or those who play games to spend time with friends, as pastime, relieve stress, or to have some fun. Third are computer addicts who spend almost all day just playing computer games (Poon A.). But the only focus of this paper is computer addicts.
According to an article entitled Computer Game Addiction – MMORPGs, Computer game addiction comes in many forms. Of all these forms, perhaps MMORPGs, or massive multiplayer online role-playing games, results in the most severe form of addiction. One reason for this lies in how MMORPGs are structured. In the majority of MMORPGs, the game world continues to develop even after a player has logged off. This indirectly encourages many players to push themselves to spend more time online, as only when they are logged in can their in-game character progress and gain power. This gives a vicious circle effect to computer game addiction. Some MMORPGs addicts seem fully aware of this compulsion, with some feeling that they spend too little time online and that they should put more effort into their character or guild. If you are wondering how much time they are spending playing the said games. Also according to same article, the average online computer game player plays around 25 hours per week. While the average online computer game addict plays 25 hours a week, over 1/10 of all players play online games in excess of 40 hours a week. As you can see playing 25 hours a week for an average computer addict is almost equal for a television addict in America, but playing 40 hours a week is very unnecessary for a person because that is like the hours a student dedicates to school or a full-time job.
