Computers have changed drastically from the time when they were first invented. The first computers were used for simple activities such as keeping records. Now, computers have gained many new uses. Computers are used in businesses, schools, homes, and many other places. Being educated on using computers can help job-seekers obtain a better job and can also have many other benefits. Though the uses of computers vary greatly, one aspect that is certain, the need for educating people on how to use computers has increased greatly.
One of the reasons being educated in operating computers is important is those who are competent are able to acquire jobs that provide a higher income and jobs that may be easier. Having experience in computers is a skill that is desired greatly by many businesses. According to a study done by the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project, sixty-two percent of workers use computers at work (Madden and Jones). These results indicate over half of the working force uses computers in some way at their workplace. Most businesses rely on computers and the employees who work with them. Without the computers, the businesses would be ineffective. Since computers are a key factor in making businesses successful, employers take great care in seeking employees filled with computer knowledge. Some of the skills employers want employees to have is the ability to build websites, open and save files, create tables and charts, and also use word processing programs. Surveys have shown that computer literacy is just below communication skills and analytical ability on an employer’s list of skills wanted in a future employee (Hinders). For job-seekers who are not experienced in computer usage, finding a job is more difficult (Johnson). Many employers are actually dismissing employees with no computer skills due to the fact that they cannot use the computer to complete the task that is required. For this reason gaining knowledge about computers can be beneficial. As more companies rely on computers, finding individuals with computer skills is a problem that is going to continue to grow.
A second reason is that many more jobs will be available due to the growth of the use of computers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer system design and related services are in the top three growth industries ("Table 2. Employment by Major Industry Sector, 1998, 2008, and Projected 2018.") In the future, this growth will only continue due to the use of computers in most everything we do. Having the knowledge to take advantage of the jobs created from this growing industry is important for future employees.
Another reason why learning about computers is becoming essential is many activities that people use on a daily basis are being replaced with computers.
