Computers have become an integral part of our lives, from researchingvarious topics to submitting papers, to making power point presentations,to chatting across the town, province, country and world with loved oneswithout paying long distance fees. Much like automobiles and homes, buyinga computer can be a very difficult decision with all the manufacturers andoptions available. I will look at purchasing a computer from either astore or through the Internet. I will look at both the advantages anddisadvantages of each. I will also briefly describe computers with similaroptions and specifications. When purchasing a computer through the Internet, it is extremelyimportant to stay with a reputable manufacturer like Dell for instance.Dell computers are used by most universities in the world and the workworld as well. Shopping on-line also affords the customer the opportunityto shop at any specific time and not be tied down to store hours.Dell offers a security policy and guarantees shipping within aspecified time period. By using the Internet, the purchaser eliminates themiddleman and deals directly with the manufacturer. This reduces the cost. The manufacturer may also offer reduced rates and special pricing andfinancial packages that a retailer may not be able to offer. Warrantiesoffered by Dell are very comparable to those offered by retailers. Virusprotection offered by Dell is also very comparable to that offered byretailers. Additional virus protection can also be downloaded free ofcharge or purchased if required. When making any major purchase it is always a good idea to do somecomparison shopping, shopping around for the best deal. Visiting differentsites on the Internet is easy and fast. Specifications for variouscomputers can be downloaded or printed for easy comparison. Anotheradvantage to Dell is that the computer can be customized to meet yourneeds. Adding extra memory or improving the speed of the processor can beadded later if needed. Again there may be problems regarding shipping butDell has an excellent record in filling orders.Buying on-line can also make the customer leery for many reasons.Although Dell salespeople are very informative, there is not that face toface trust established with a salesperson in a store. If one is not veryknowledgeable about computers, he/she may forget to ask some pertinentquestions. There is always the risk of identity theft, having one's creditcard information stolen or errors in the order itself. The possibility ofthe computer being lost in transit or arriving later than expected is alsopossible, although one can easily trace their computer through Dell. Oneother disadvantage may be that the customer has to return the computer tothe manufacturer if there are any problems. But most retailers do not fixthe computers they sell either. In most cases, they have to send them to atechnician as well.Purchasing a computer from the...
