There are many ways to make a decision and one of the many methods is through consensus. All individuals settle on an agreement but it does not fully satisfy each person’s wants. Consensus causes individuals to make decisions that they will regret. Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s “Harrison Bergeron” are both examples of ineffective decision making through consensus. Both stories demonstrate how conflict develops when decisions are made through consensus as well as how consequences are given when individuals begin to oppose the general decision.
First of all, conflict arises when decisions are made through consensus. In both stories, a character vs. society conflict is present. Both protagonists face challenges when they disagree with the general decision as society does not accept their difference in values and morals. In “The Lottery”, Tessie Hutchinson has conflict with the traditions of her village. Hutchinson cries “it isn’t fair, it isn’t right” when she wins the lottery (Jackson 789). Similarly in “Harrison Bergeron”, Harrison faces conflict with the government of the United States of America when he disagrees with the “211th, 212th and 213th Amendments of the Constitution” that limits everyone’s knowledge and strengths to ensure that everyone is equal (Vonnegut 1). However in “Harrison Bergeron”, Harrison also faces conflict with another character, Diana Moon Glampers, as the Handicapper General kills him due to a difference in beliefs. Both stories demonstrate how conflict forms when an individual gives up their own power of decision making to a larger group. Letting a group compromise on an important issue is not effective as each individual’s opinion is not clearly expressed. This leads to possibilities of conflict later on as people may start to disagree and protest. Conflicts within society or between people can form as shown in the two stories. It could also force them to make decisions that they will regret later on.
