Imagine a world where the number of species has been greatly diminished, water sources that were once crystal blues are now brown and thick, and plant life has disappeared. This is not difficult for most people to visualize, but it is hard to stomach. Numerous people have contemplated this as a possible fate for our planet. One of those individuals was Theodor Geisel, Dr. Seuss, who based his work The Lorax, off of this concept. If we do not want this type of outcome to be our fortune then we need to put more efforts into conservation. Many people use this word without knowing what it really means or how to take action to increase its effectiveness.
When the average person is asked about what conservation is they have a simple idea that it is protecting something. In reality though it is so much more than that. Conservation is about not only protecting species and land, but also restoring and preserving it so future generations can experience the benefits and power that these great varieties of species and lands can bring. Conservation also means considering sustainability.
Protection, restoration, preservation, and sustainability are all words that get thrown around a great deal, and now it seems as if their meanings have become hollow. Sustainability is one term that most think they understand, but the truth is they associate it with the three Rs of reduce, reuse, and recycle; that is it end of story. Sustainability is tremendously more than that; it is a way a living so that you do not leave an excessive impact of waste and degradation on this earth, but instead you leave a footprint large enough for others to see and follow. If people can see what it truly means to be sustainable, and how easy it is to achieve in their own homes, then that is one massive step forward for conservation efforts.
Another one of the many facets that is conservation is information. This information includes conducting research and studies, as well as educating the public as to the action that desperately needs to be taken and how they can be a part of the solution, instead of an obstruction. This challenge of informing the people about what conservation is, falls on conservationists.
Conservationists and careers in conservation can entail an almost unlimited amount of practices. A conservationist’s job can be a scientist out in the field or in the lab evaluating the current condition of a species or ecosystem and predicting what will happen to that in the future. Another career path if you are more into the political aspect rather than the science is through environmental law and policy. In this type of position you could be the one writing documents that force people to take action. Yet another different option for a conservationist is in education. You could get a job teaching, and begin fostering in the next generation of eco champions. These are only a few types of positions a conservationist could hold. Most careers in the field...
