Abigail Gentry Lab Report Period: 7Conservation of Mass LabIntroduction:The Law of Conservation of Mass says that matter can be changed from one form to another and mixtures can be separated or made, but the total amount of mass remains the same. The purpose of this experiment is to verify the Law of Conservation of Mass using baking soda and vinegar. In any chemical reaction, the total mass of the recants is equal to the mass of the products. Knowing this, it can be concluded that if baking soda is mixed with vinegar, then the total mass of the items will be the same after they are mixed together. A variable that has to be taken into consideration is the gas that is released when vinegar and baking soda are mixed. If the gas is not contained, then the mass will be different when measured.Methods and Materials:The materials needed to complete this experiment were a balance, a plastic bag, a graduated cylinder, baking soda, vinegar, and small paper cups. Two systems were used and one trial was done for each system. For the first system, which is the open system, 9.6 milliliters of vinegar was measured with a graduated cylinder and poured into a paper cup. Then, 5.0 grams of baking soda was measured with a triple beam balance and put into a paper cup. After that, both cups were placed on the balance and their total mass was measured.
