Marijuana is one of the hundreds of drugs that holds Americans in the bondage of addiction and causes harm to their health and well-being. Marijuana comes from the hemp plant called cannabis sativa and is the most commonly used illegal drug in the U.S. (Goldberg). Although marijuana has mostly been used as a drug to get high, physicians have recently discovered that marijuana can treat the symptoms of cancer and multiple sclerosis, relieve pain, and treat many minor ailments. Because of the rare healing effects of this drug, many states are working to legalize medical marijuana in their state, but there is much controversy over whether or not medical marijuana should be legalized. Although medical marijuana has been proven to relieve pain and treat the symptoms of many life-threatening illnesses, the harmful side effects, the possibility of addiction and Americans untrustworthiness causes medical marijuana to be an implausible healing agent.
Marijuana, also known as weed, is smoked for the high, as well as for “nausea, glaucoma, appetite simulations, mucous membrane inflammation, leprosy, fever, dandruff, hemorrhoids, obesity, asthma, urinary tract infections, cough, anorexia associated with weight loss in AIDS patients, pain, and multiple sclerosis” (“Marijuana Overview Information”). Medicines to treat some of the listed ailments have not been found as of, yet so patients are suffering from pain and ongoing symptoms from their disease or illness. The only treatment for some of these ongoing symptoms and pain is medical marijuana. This is why medical marijuana is being pushed to be legalized in America. The “high” that users get from smoking marijuana relieves pain for a short period of time. Dr. Mark Ware tested cannabis (marijuana) on twenty-one patients who all suffered with some sort of chronic nerve pain. His testing showed that cannabis does have some degree of pain relief. Dr. Ware stated that cannabis relieves pain by “changing the way the nerves function” (Ware). WebMD says that, “Marijuana contains chemicals that work by binding to specific sites in the brain and on the nerves” (“Marijuana Overview Information”). Medical marijuana is beneficial for pain relief and minor illnesses as well as large ones.
Marijuana treats the symptoms of life-threatening illnesses such as cancer and multiple sclerosis. The cannabinoids in marijuana can reduce vomiting, nausea, lower pain, and stimulate the appetite in cancer patients. As of late, researchers are saying that marijuana’s hemp oil can cure cancer (Corey-Bloom). If this theory is proven to be true, medical marijuana would probably be legalized much faster and in more states. The effects of marijuana are most prominently seen in multiple sclerosis patients. “Investigators at the University of California at San Diego concluded that smoked cannabis was superior to placebo in reducing spasticity and pain in patients with multiple sclerosis and provided some benefit beyond currently...
