Course overview essay: Writing & Research Process
English 102 have opened a new point of view in my mind. I discovered how to do research in a different language and realized that my brain was covered with dust, this is the first time after 5 years that I’m a former student and trying to get a second degree. Before I registered this class, I looked up a website called “Grade your Teacher” and the comments about the instructor were positive, so I decided to take it. At the beginning of this class (back to September 23rd) and after receiving a 0.0 as a grade for my first essay, I knew this was going to be hard, and I had no idea about how I was going to pass this research course.
One of the first concepts that I learned was “marginalia” which –according to the teacher’s explanation- means to take random notes about something to think later. Now I’m exploring how my skills as a writer and researcher have improved over the last three months.
At the beginning of the quarter I was disappointed because all the knowledge that I thought I had from English 101 was replaced with new ideas, meanings and explanations. Something that blow my mind up was the note map taking, that was completely new for me and at the beginning I felt it was really hard to read something and decide what was important enough to be on the paper. Eventually it became part of my life and I do that in most of my classes. Writing summaries and essays became easier when having previous notes divided in different categories. I’ve been working hard on trying to tie sources and leave on a side the linear structure essay. I think that’s one of the hardest things to do but I think that –like everything- is a matter of time and practice to be able to do this without thinking too much about it.
Since the beginning of the...
