Despite the progression of civilization and society’s attempts to stop man’s darker side, immorality and violence proves to be both indestructible and inevitable; culturally embraced thoughts and perceptions for goodness, each individual is exposed to his natural instincts of evil. In Williams Golding’s Lord of The Flies a group of apparent innocent British boys suffer an accident while on an airplane and finished at a completely desolated island. Subsequently the kids managed to construct a society with established tasks, and rules. Personal desires, lack of communication, savagery and fear towards the unknown distract the kids from their ambition of getting rescued and cause their society to segregate collapse.
Society is nothing but rules that keep us from going only after one’s interests. Since the boys touched dry land, they built their society upon rules that would not specifically befit a certain individual, but the entire group. “We have got to have rules and obey them. After all, we are not savages. We are English, and the English are best at everything.”(40) As previously stated, this quote proves the numerous rules the kids live by; however, like in any society the rules are consistently violated. Furthermore this quotation allows the reader to have a perception of the kids’ background.
When is a rule just a suggestion? And when do suggestions morph into rules? All human beings have desires that come natural, the struggle begins when someone is forced to do something while their aspirations are considerable. An instance of this is when jack has to protect the fire; however, he decides to hunt instead. “His mind was crowded with memories; memories of the knowledge that had come to them when they closed in on the struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away its life like a long satisfying drink.”(70) This exposes how much Jack enjoys hunting but additionally how sadistic he is. A combination of food need and sadistic killing techniques shows that Jack will not tolerate Ralph’s rules and will go as far as necessary to impose his likes. In addition this is one of the first signals of an eventual succession.
Demons and Goddess have the same impact on human beings. The figure of something unknown, beyond our knowledge and power makes us experience fear. While on a hike exploring the island, the kids find the corpse of a dead parachutist; with the parachute still attached to the body, and the wind blowing the kids contemplate a beast. However; the older kids refused this idea. “Maybe There is a beast…maybe it’s just only us”(80), “this head is for the beast ....
