There are more deaths by abortions than war casualties together, now that’s something to think about (Abortion Statistics). Abortion is a controversial topic, with many opinions and valid points. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy by surgical or medical means (Vaughn 161). I believe that it is wrong to abort a baby because it is alive. Some believe a baby is alive at conception and others after several weeks. Either way it is not right. Life is regarded as precious and we should cherish it.
Abortion touches on our deepest values and basic beliefs. Abortion shows the clashes between two conflicting worldviews. The humanistic says, "Man is the highest standard there is. You don't answer to anyone, so do whatever you want," while the Christian view says, "We answer to God, and he has commanded us not to murder. We must always submit our desires and preferences to the authority of his word" (Abortion: A Biblical View).
As a Christian, I stand strong against abortion due to views and supported points of religious aspects. The bible states that "Thou shalt not murder" (Exodus 20:13), giving supporting detail that one, the woman, should not kill the fetus inside her or it is considered murder. In Psalm 127:3 it is said "Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him” supporting that a baby is something precious and that you should keep the baby because it is a blessing to have conceived it to begin with. Also, in Isaiah 44:2 it states "This is what the Lord says- he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you" telling us that you made the baby and it is your job to have and care for it. It is you that needs to help raise the baby as they grow through the years.
Now, humanistic views express the acceptance of sexual activity and abortion. In today’s world it is difficult to find a successful television show or popular song that does not embrace sexual activity. Teenagers are becoming open about their sex life because of the sexual mores they see all over social sites. People are also loosening up to all of these factors that once were considered wrong, leading to the acceptance of abortions. The society we are living in today is losing the moral and religious values that once were present. Many people these days are pro-abortion and think it as morally just.
A rule-utilitarian will judge abortion as morally right or wrong depending on the rule being followed and the amount of happiness resulting. Liberals think that abortion is always permissible (pro-choice). They base it on the view of the moral status of the fetus like the conservatives do. Liberals believe you should not give one the death penalty because it is morally wrong, yet feel it is permissible for a women to have an abortion when that is still killing a person. In contrast to the conservatives the liberals assert that the fetus is not a person and does not have full moral rights (Vaughn 165-167).
