Critical Thinking: Strategies in Decision MakingMGT 350October 25,2004Decision Making Model Analysis Everyday we are faced with making decisions, decisions of varying importance. These decisions not only affects us, but it can also have a major affect on people we love, people we work with, people who are for and also against us, basically it touches everyone we deal with directly and indirectly. In our workplace, organizations depend their success on decisions we make, for these decisions can have major influences in both long-term performances of an organization as well as its day-to-day operations. And just as with organizations, my career will have to depend on what decisions I make, the paths taken to get there and also on the quality of the decisions I make regarding my jobs and employment status.Decision-Making Approaches So how do we approach decision-making? Is there a right way? Certainly there must be. Then if there is a right way, there should be a wrong way also. I'm no dummy, so I will try to do it the right way by using a decision making model, a modified version from "Rick Robert's 7-step Decision Making Model for Career Decision Making." (2004). About 4 years ago, after resigning my position with the Civil Service, I was offered a position with my now present employer, Lockheed Martin as a Field Service Rep working with sailors out in the fleet. Since this was a brand new program for us, there weren't too many Field Service Representatives yet that could do this type of job. This was going to be an independent duty, which meant I was on my own most of the time and all decisions had to be made by me and they had to be the right ones because lives and multi-million dollar equipments were on stake. I was more worried about the lives that depended on the right decisions rather than the million dollar equipments because equipment can be replaced, but not lives. The basic decision-making process that I used to help me in that situation provided me with the framework to come up with the right decision. It showed me the steps that I needed to be a smart and vigilant decision maker. It made me an alert, thorough, open, and persistent in looking at and evaluating different possibilities."Rick Robert's Modified 7-Step Decision Making Model" (2004)· IDENTIFY THE DECISION TO BE MADE1.
