Critique Of Whither Pakistan? A Five Year Forecast

1789 words - 8 pages

Pakistan emerged as a separate homeland for Muslims after years of suffering and hard work and the sacrifices of Muslims to strive for a symbol which could unite the force of Islam and the brotherhood of Muslims. In the contemporary world, the state once formed to be a symbolic key for all the Muslims in the world is crippling due to ethnic conflicts, terrorism, religious extremism and conflicts between the Army and the government itself. The article “Whither Pakistan? A five-year forecast” was published in a magazine called “Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists” on June 3, 2009. The Author of this article is Dr.Pervez HoodBhoy who is a nuclear physicist, a social activist and a political defense analyst. This article was published at a time when outlaws and terrorism, Bomb Blasts and the Pakistan Army was fighting against Taliban in the northern areas of Pakistan and HoodBhoy as a defense analyst wrote this article to predict the upcoming five years in such a state. The primary purpose of this article is to target the audience and urge them to think that it is time that we should end terrorism and start thinking about inflation, poverty and unemployment in the country. HoodBhoy analyses various perspectives on the existence of the current situation in the state and mentions the reason behind the formation of the Taliban, their rise and the change in the policies of Pakistan Army and the government who in the beginning had a soft corner for these rebellious insurgents.
The author begins the article by providing his assumptions as the conclusion of his context summing up the whole article in the start, since it gives an idea about the article to the reader and shows the author being unbiased in his work. Various arguments from the western media and the western officials were considered and then refuting their assumptions and then again claiming “Collapse isn’t impending, but there is a slow burning fuse. “ proves an eye catching tool in the article and use of emotional appeal to persuade the audience to agree with the point of view of the author.
The analytical tone is evident from the start, especially in the bottom line part when the author presents the moral of the article. Then coming over to the good news about the validity of the assumptions made by the American official and then turning over to the bad news. The Author has properly sequenced the start in a way so that the reader may not lose interest in the context. The article is primarily targeted towards the common people of Pakistan and the people in different parts of the world and want to know about the current political situation in Pakistan. This article is excerpt from a magazine and so might include occasional readers along with the avid readers.
HoodBhoy keeps a general and a convincing approach throughout the article but his assumptions like ‘Many fighters were products of madrassas in Pakistan’ may sound offensive to some of the readers. One of the main appreciable features of...
