Current Event Pap Essay

1711 words - 7 pages

The quote “politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy” said by Ernest Benn, is not true for the current U.S. Congress. The U.S. Congress is bicameral, meaning it is made up of two houses. These houses are The Senate and The House of Representatives. The Senate is equally represented by each state, and The House of Representatives is represented based on population. There are two senators from each state, with a total of 100 senators. In the Senate, the Democrats have majority. The Senate Majority Leader is Harry Reid and the Minority leader is Mitch McConnell. There are 435 representatives in the House of Representatives. In the House of Representatives, the Republicans have majority. The Speaker of the House is John Boehner. INTRO
The current Congress does not look for trouble. Instead, they try to solve the given problems the best they can. Congress has been trying to solve the problem with immigration. Last year, the Senate passed a bill for immigration (Shear and Parker House G.O.P.’s Immigration Plan Presents Tough Choices for Obama 14). The House of Representatives is still trying to come to a compromise, but the Democrats and Republicans have different views on some of the issues. Republicans want to secure the borders, so people cannot cross the border illegally. They also want a zero tolerance policy illegal border crossing and for expired visas. Republicans also hope for visa and green card allocations given to individuals that will help the economy. They are also pushing for the temporary worker programs to promote economic needs of the country and national security. These worker programs would allow companies to hire foreign workers. Republicans would also like for children legally brought here to have legal residency and a possible path for citizenship. If immigration laws were broken, these people could live in the U.S., but admit their guilt. In addition, they would have to have to pass many background checks and pay fines. These people would have to learn English and American civics. It is also important that they are able to provide for themselves ( Speaker of the House, John Boehner’s plan is for zero tolerance for illegal immigrants and overstayed visas (Shear and Parker House G.O.P.’s Immigration Plan Presents Tough Choices for Obama 14). ADD MORE opinion
Democrats also want some similar things. They want more security on borders and new worker programs too. The Democrats want the 11 million illegal immigrants to be able to become citizens, while the republicans would give them legal status, but not citizenship (Harrison Low Profile on Immigration 132).
Although Democrats do not agree with all the aspects of the Republican plan, they were happily surprised that the Republican’s plan did not include “SAFE Act.” This would include pulling people over and asking for their. The republican’s plan not including the SAFE...

Through Jim’s, Huck’s, and modern day superstitions, it is clear that superstition plays a big role in the culture of a society, frequently used for explaining an event or occurrence in a simpler, more understandable way. By looking at current and old superstitions, there are many inferences one can make about both societies, acting as a brief portal into different lives of the past and present.
