Recently, Dylan Farrow, the daughter of filmmaker Woody Allen, wrote an open letter to her father about the sexual abuse she claims to have suffered at his hands over 20 years ago. At the time of her original accusation, Allen denied that he had ever sexually abused Farrow. Woody Allen did not seem to suffer much either personally or professionally from the accusations, and went on to make more movies and marry and have children with Previn. The story faded into the background, seemingly without any real resolution, until recently.
Earlier this year, Dylan Farrow wrote her open letter to Allen. When I read the letter, it just felt true. Dylan states that so many things were done to her “so often, so routinely, so skillfully hidden from a mother that would have protected me had she known, that I thought it was normal. I thought this was how fathers doted on their daughters.” So, it was not just the accusation of sexual assault against Allen, but the many sick, perverted things that he allegedly did leading up to it, that for me, speak the truth loud and clear. Abusers often start out slowly, grooming the child and slowly escalating the abuse to make the child feel, as Dylan did, that it was normal. If what Dylan says is true, and I believe that it is, Allen took his time getting her used to touched sexually, before finally perpetrating the assault that finally led Dylan to tell her mother.
