Europe’s biggest and more serious health challenge is mental and neurological disorders, finds a recent study. More than 160 million, around 38.2 per cent of the EU population suffer from some form of mental and neurological disorder. The study finds the burden is aggravated when the disorders remain untreated. The three- year multi-method study carried out by the College of European Neuropsychopharmacology in partnership with European Brain Council covered a population of 514 million people from 30 European countries including EU plus Switzerland, Iceland and Norway. People from the age 2 to 65+years were covered in the study showing the prevalence among all age groups and the most frequent disorders are anxiety disorder (14%), Insomnia (7%), depression (6.9%), Alcohol and substance abuse (> 4%), Attention Deficit and Hyper-activity Disorder (ADH) (5% in young), Dementia (1% among those aged 65 and above, 30% among those aged 85 and above), and Somatoform disorders (6.3%).
