Cyber bullying is defined as being cruel, threatening or mean to someone through forms of technology, including computers through the internet or via cell phone. Cyber bullying causes its’ victims to suffer shame, embarrassment, anger, depression and withdrawal, and even in extreme situations it can lead to teenage suicide, as quoted on www.cyberbullying.info. Through the use of action plans, the Year Eleven Health Education class aimed to decrease prevalence and increase awareness of cyber bullying, among the Year 9 student cohort at Meridan State College.

The Year 11 Health Education class identified that cyber bullying takes place in Year 9 at Meridan State College, due to the socio-cultural factors that affect individuals in their everyday lives. Peer groups have a huge influence on students today, as they set standards, influence others around them and also follow examples that are displayed through the media. A pre survey was conducted by the Health Education class that was distributed to the Year 9’s and the results identified the need for community action at Meridan State College regarding cyber bullying. Following this survey, individual Year 11 Health Education students constructed action plans and were trialled by the Year 9 students. (Some action plans were unable to be administrated due to individual issues). A post survey was then conducted and the data was surprising, as the results had changed significantly from the pre-survey. For example only 63% of Year 9 students (pre survey) blocked bullies online if they were tormented by them, and the post survey analysis showed that 92% of students blocked bullies(See appendix 1). A 29% difference of results has occurred and more students were aware of how crucial it was to block bullies online. According to www.I-Safe.com.au , which was accessed on the 15/03/11, 58% of students in Australia who are cyber bullied refuse to tell their parents if they are bullied online whereas 72% of Meridan State College Year 9 students inform either a parent or an adult if they are having troubles online. (See Appendix 1.1) This data shows that students at Meridan State College are taking more action against cyber bullying compared to the rest of the Nation. The Health Education class participated in many discussions regarding why the Year 9 students bully others and whether our hypothesis was supported by the results of both the surveys, and action plans.
The Health Education class hypothesized that Year 9 students bullied due to boredom and family issues at home, as well as the feeling of holding power over another human being. The Year 9 cohort suggested that students bully due to boredom, to target specific children, because they suffer past/present family issues and to promote their social status. 62% of students voted that students’ cyber bullied for these predicted reasons on the pre-survey and then 83% voted this on the post survey.
