The “Y Generation” (beginning birth dates from the early 1980s to the early 2000s) is known for their extensive use of technology. They rely on it for both schoolwork and entertainment. But what happens when technology becomes a weapon used for bullying, where any and all who have access to the Internet can witness it?
“No longer limited to the schoolyard, bullying is gaining new and more vicious forms online. Government statistics show more than one in three young people have experienced cyber threats online. And more than 25 percent of adolescents and teens have been repeatedly bullied through their cell phones or the Internet” (Lucia 2012).

About half of young people have experienced some form of cyber bullying. 10 to 20 percent experience it regularly” (“Bullying Statistics”). These statistics grow each year and are the same throughout the entire DFW area. Due to this increase in the usage of cellphones, as of 2011, “[suicide] is the third leading cause of death for people 15-to-24 years old” (Webb, 2011).
In my opinion, cyber bullies who hide behind freedom of speech are twisting the law to their advantage. Yes, I do believe we have the right to say what we want and when we want, but not at the expense of one’s sanity or life. These victims of cyber bullying are mentally and emotionally destroyed, and nothing can be done because the aggressors have the law on their side. It is classic manipulation of politics; advantageously using these policies set to give each of us individual freedom.
I try to not ever criticize or bully someone on the Internet, because anyone can see what I write and add onto it. I may not be directly bullying anyone, but I could have started it with one simple statement. Having witnessed my younger sister fall victim to cyber bullying, it pains me to know how easy someone can turn a social network into a place of pain and suffering, to a point where some seek peace within their own death.
