Carbon dioxide is the natural, colorless, odorless gas; it is stable at room temperature. It is produced by living things as a waste product of a respiration, which is then utilized by plants to form food through photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide is a compound of two oxygen atoms and one carbon atoms. It has double covalent bonds which bonded between two oxygen atoms and one carbon atom. It is naturally present in the atmosphere as a part of the earth carbon cycle. Its chemical formula is CO2 which has a half-life that ranges from 50 to 200 years .
Carbon dioxide (CO2) has so many potential uses in the world. Its uses expand from the production of refrigeration systems, welding systems, water treatment process to carbonation of beverages, fire extinguisher, and food preservation to the manufacturing of electronic equipments. In refrigeration and welding systems, carbon dioxide is utilized as the source of energy of heating in welding; carbon-dioxide produces energy for cooling in refrigerating system. Moreover, carbon-dioxide is used in the process of water treatment to stabilize the PH of water. Furthermore, Carbon dioxide is used by fire fighters as an extinguisher for various kind of fire such as electricity, solvents, fuels, and oils. Hence, carbon-dioxide plays an important role in the containment of fire combustion .
In food manufacturing however, carbon dioxide’s main purpose is a food preservative, which increases the durability of foods. In the electronics industry, carbon-dioxide is mostly use for the making of batteries as a source of energy.
Carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas, generated through human activities such as electricity, transportation, and industry. In 2011, carbon dioxide accounted for about 84 percent of United States greenhouse gas emissions . In the United States, electricity is the most source of power for home, businesses, and factories. The burning of fossil fuel to produce electricity is the leading cause of carbon dioxide in America; accordingly, this activity is responsible for 38 percent of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere . Additionally, transportation is a second source of carbon dioxide by way of burning gasoline and diesel to transport goods, people via by air or land. This human activity in the United...
