Data Input/ Output Methods, Storage Devices And Computer Speed

1999 words - 8 pages

A current business has the opportunity to obtain innovative technology to generate its own digital data. Even still, there are several concerns, which should be considered when purchasing computer software or hardware. This paper will cover what method of data input would be best in certain situations and why. Next the paper will explain what method of output would be best for certain circumstances and why. This paper will also explain what situations are appropriate for certain storage devices and why. Lastly, this paper will explain the role of certain components in determining the speed of a computer. The accuracy of data input is crucial. "Web applications are notorious for taking practically any type of input, assuming that it's valid, and processing it further" (Beaver, 2006).If individuals who develop Web applications do not validate input, the result can be a great blunder (Beaver, 2006). Mistakes like this may end up being malicious database manipulation, system crashes and even database corruption (Beaver, 2006).There are several ways to gather information. Each situation is best dealt with using a specific method of data input. The Optical Data Readers is the appropriate method to use for printed questionnaires. According to the required text for this class Fundamentals of Information Processing:The two categories of optical data readers are for optical mark recognition (OMR) and optical character recognition (OCR). People completing OMR forms use pencils to fill in boxes on OMR paper, which is also called a "mark sense form." OMR is used in standardized tests (including SAT and GMAT tests), surveys, and census taking. In comparison, most OCR readers use reflected light to recognize various characters. With special software, OCR readers can convert handwritten or typed documents into digital data" (Stair & Reynolds, 2006).When in the situation of telephone surveys the best method of data input is a voice-recognition tool. A voice recognition apparatus uses special software with a microphone to translate the reverberation of a person's voice to a digital signal. This method is the appropriate choice of data input since the devices record and change the input of a human's voice during the actual telephone survey (Stair & Reynolds, 2006).The situation of bank checks requires a method, which reads and inputs data quickly. This would be the use of a Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) device. When using this method, the data is positioned at the bottom of a check by way of a special magnetic ink (Stair & Reynolds, 2006). This special ink allows the printed data to be read by both computers and people by using a special character set (Stair & Reynolds, 2006).Bar code scanners are the best methods for retail tags. To read a bar code label on retail tags, the scanner uses a laser. Retail businesses can use this type of technology to direct and monitor items by scanning the retail tags when any merchandise leaves and enters...

Data Storage and Transmission

769 words - 3 pages . Vision, for example, is an analog experience because we perceive infinitely smooth gradations of shapes and colors. When used in reference to data storage and transmission, analog format is that in which information is transmitted by modulating a continuous transmission signal, such as amplifying a signal's strength or varying its frequency to add or take away data. For example, telephones take sound vibrations and turn them into electrical

Input/Output-to-State Stability and Output-to-State Stability of Direct-Form Digital Filters with Finite Wordlength Nonlinearity

1274 words - 6 pages This paper proposes a new criterion for the input/output-to-state stability (IOSS) of interfered direct-form digital filters with finite wordlength nonlinearity based on an augmented Lyapunov function. Without external interference, the output-to-state stability (OSS) and asymptotic stability of direct-form digital filters with finite wordlength nonlinearity are also guaranteed under the proposed criterion. This criterion is expressed by linear
